Key Responsibilities
Preoperative Duties: OT Technicians prepare the operating theatre by sterilizing instruments, arranging surgical equipment, and ensuring all necessary supplies are available. They also assist in positioning patients on the operating table to prevent pressure ulcers or nerve injuries during lengthy procedures.
Intraoperative Duties: During surgery, OT Technicians assist surgeons and nurses by providing instruments and supplies, monitoring equipment, and maintaining a sterile environment. They may also support anesthetic teams and respond to critical situations to safeguard patient health.
Postoperative Duties: After surgery, OT Technicians clean and sterilize instruments, manage biomedical waste, and ensure the operating theatre is ready for the next procedure. They may also assist in patient recovery and monitor vital signs as needed.
- Knowledge of surgical instruments and aseptic techniques
- Ability to operate and maintain surgical equipment
- Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols
- Calmness under high-pressure situations
- Physical fitness for lifting and handling equipment and patients
Qualifications
Require a diploma or certification in Operation Theatre Technology or a related field. Admission often requires completion of 10+2 with science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and a minimum percentage as specified by the institution. Practical experience through internships or on-the-job training is highly recommended.
